Modern languages at DKH

The curriculum for KS2 is based on the guidelines in the QCA Spanish schemes of work for KS2, and it follows the KS2 Framework for Languages.

We have adapted this to the context of our school and the abilities of our children.

Through a variety of topics, the children are taught how to:

  • Ask and answer questions
  • Use correct pronunciation and grammar
  • Memorise words
  • Interpret meaning through listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Work in pairs and groups and communicate in Spanish
  • Look at aspects of everyday life and culture in their own and different countries
  • Develop an understanding of other cultures, as well as their own

Teaching of MFL

We use a variety of techniques and resources to encourage the children to have an active engagement in the modern foreign language, including stories, mime, games and (action) songs.  We make use of the interactive whiteboard to extend learning of the foreign language, using a variety of dedicated websites.

From KS1 we emphasize listening, responding and speaking skills.  In KS2 we also encourage reading and writing skills, to help the children gain an all-round understanding of the language. We use a multi-sensory and kinaesthetic approach to teaching (introducing a physical element in games, songs) to help reinforce memory.  We promote the use of ICT in meaningful contexts for the development of communication skills.

We try to make the lessons as enjoyable and entertaining as possible, aiming at helping children develop a positive attitude towards the learning of Modern Foreign Languages.

We build children’s confidence by praising any contribution(s) they make in the foreign language.
